Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings is a yet another installment in the popular jRPG series. The game tells the story of two sisters running a mysterious alchemy lab and strongly emphasizes this particular kind of magical arts, offering elaborate crafting systems and rich choice of ingredients. Players are bound to spend much of their time on turn-based battles.

Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings for PC, PS4 and etc. is a Japanese RPG with a fairytale-like fantasy setting. The game has been developed by Gust – the studio responsible for all previous installments of this series.

Plot

The story campaign takes place four years after the events featured in Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey. The protagonists of the game are Lydie and Suelle – twin sisters who live in the city of Melveille, the capital of The Kingdom of Adalett. The girls want to follow their father's footsteps and study alchemy. The process of learning, however, is not at all simple.

One day, during their training, the girls hear weird noises coming from the basement. In spite of their father's prohibition, the protagonists decide to investigate the source of these sounds. They discover that it is a magic painting, inside of which there is an entirely new world filled with precious alchemy ingredients obtaining which would make it much easier for the girls to succeed.

Mechanics

According to the series' tradition, the PC, PS4 and etc. release of Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings is an elaborate jRPG, in which the gameplay revolves around the alchemy system that includes complicated recipes, rich selection of ingredients, and mechanics based on multiple minigames.

During the campaign, the players' main objective is to improve the reputation of the twins' lab and making it the top one in the official kingdom's rank – this requires players to complete tests and quests assignment by the authorities. During the game, players can freely switch control between Lydia and Suelle. Another key element is the ability to travel to a given world from a painting and using the objects and pieces of information found there to solve problems in the main protagonists' homeworld.

In combat, players get to command not only the titular sisters but also other of the team. During the turn-based battles, one is bound to utilize the gear crafter by the main protagonists. Interestingly enough, the monsters players encounter are not only a threat but also a source of precious minerals and crafting materials.
