Grand Theft Auto IV for PC, PS3 and X360 is an action game, which is the next installment of the best-selling and at the same time very controversial series, whose roots go back to 1997. This title was created in the tenth anniversary of the series, which traditionally tells stories of individual criminals, who start just as errand boys and guys who do the dirty work, but then climb higher and higher in the rank of the criminal world.

The game’s script was written by Dan Ho, who also worked on Canis Canem Edit (a.k.a. Bully), Manhunt and The Warriors, and of course put his hand to most of the previous GTA games. The plot revolves around a foreigner called Niko Bellic. Influenced by letters received from his cousin the protagonist decides to leave the Eastern Europe and comes to the United States. Unfortunately, the reality he faces is far from the one described in the e-mails. Roman had evidently lied about having two wives, a sizable collection of cars, and several-digit sum of money on his bank . Moreover, it turns out that the unruly relative constantly gets into some new troubles, and his life is not so colorful.

Open worlds are currently all the rage in the AAA segment, but nobody seems to be doing too much to expand the known formulas. Most studios seem to fail at the task, and instead of making captivating and coherent worlds, they repeat the same mistakes.

Expansion

October 29, 2009

Action

A set of two story DLCs for the fourth installment in the classic Grand Theft Auto series. It was published as a standalone game, not requiring the base game to launch. The set introduces two separate stories taking place in Liberty City, the metropolis known from GTA III and IV. The Lost and Damned focuses on a biker gang, known as The Lost, trying to gain the upper hand over a competitive criminal organization. The Ballad of Gay Tony casts the player in the role of a bodyguard protecting a night-club king indebted to the wrong kind of people, who are trying to get their money back by any means necessary. Apart from new missions, Episodes from Liberty City brings a handful of improvements and new features. Among these, it is worth mentioning new weapons and an expanded array of vehicles. The player can now use the parachute as well. Additionally, the creators implemented a multiplicity of new activities, mini-games and many multiplayer mode improvements.

Expansion

October 29, 2009

Action

The second major expansion for Grand Theft Auto IV - an action title by Rockstar Games set in the open environment of Liberty City. The expansion introduces a new storyline - the player assumes the role of Luis Lopez, a part-time gangster and an assistant of the legendary king of night clubs - Tony Prince. It turns out the protagonist's employer has earned himself the dislike of both Russian and Italian mobsters, and the player's task is to get Tony out of this troublesome situation. A number of new locations was created for the sake of the expansion, including night clubs, golf courses, an underground boxing ring and more. The expansion features mainly colorful story missions. During these, the protagonist not only drives vehicles or shoots enemies, but also performs such breakneck acts as blowing up a yacht, stealing a car from a moving train, or parachuting off a skyscraper. Additionally, the expansion offers a variety of side activities and mini-games, such as dancing at the clubs, and introduces new weapons and vehicles to the game.

Action

The first major expansion for Grand Theft Auto IV - a sandbox developed by Rockstar Games. In order to launch it, the base game is required. Similar to the core game, the story of the expansion is set in Liberty City. This time, the player assumes the role of Johnny Klebitz, the leader of a biker gang known as The Lost. Apart from having to deal with a competitive group known as Angels of Death, the protagonist has to deal with internal power struggle and the insane former boss of The Lost. The player's base of operations is the hideout of the gang, where key figures can be met, and different mini-games can be played. The essence of the gameplay comes with the story missions however, the completion of which in most cases requires the player to reach a designated location, exchange fire with enemies or chase them in a spectacular fashion. As a biker gang leader, Johnny rides a bike for the most part, and he is often accompanied by other of The Lost. Additionally, the expansion features several new vehicles, weapons, radio stations and multiplayer modes.

To say there's a lot to uncover in Grand Theft Auto IV is a gross understatement. There's an absolutely phenomenal amount of stuff in here, and even after you finish the story mode (which involves 90-plus missions and took us close to 40 hours, in a week spent doing almost nothing except playing the game), there's enough here to keep you occupied for months. Hell, even Niko's cell-phone is completely customizable with new themes and ringtones, and there's a ton of weird, silly things hidden on the in-game internet that many players will probably never even read. Frankly, the thing is a ridiculous value for the price; it's easily the most ambitious game ever attempted, and that it came through with only a few notable flaws is outstanding.

Eurogamer: 10 / 10 by Tom Bramwell

Almost everything you do in Liberty City would be good enough to drive its own game, and the best parts would be good enough to outrun the competition, but the reason it works so well is that Rockstar has made a game that requires no patience to play. This, as much as its usual coherency and the best script in the series, is what makes GTA IV the best openworld game yet, and why it will take something miraculous to rob it of game of the year status.
