The Thaumaturge (earlier known as Vitriol) is an RPG set in an alternate 20th century Warsaw. The game was developed by the Polish studio Fool's Theory, previously known for working alongside the Belgian Larian Studios on games such as Seven: The Days Long Gone.
The Thaumaturge is set in 1905's Warsaw. It's a multicultural metropolis, where while the upper classes hold lavish parties, the criminals deal in dark alleys. Reigned by the Russian Tsardom, the city is a melting pot, inhabited by Polish townspeople, Jewish merchants, Russian soldiers and many others.
It's also the territory of the titular thaumaturges - people with supernatural abilities, able to perceive and use Salutors, esoteric entities. The game's protagonist, Wiktor Szulski, is one such thaumaturge, here in Warsaw to handle family matters. Using his abilities, he discovers the secrets of the city and its people.
Though the story is mostly fictional, it features appearances of real historical figures.
The Thaumaturge is an isometric game. The player traverses the occupied streets of Warsaw, completing quests, talking to characters and making moral choices. We can wield the Salutors to our benefit while exploring, manipulating other characters and fighting enemies.
Combat is turn-based, letting us wield different weapons, firearms and supernatural abilities. The latter let us deal direct damage and inflict negative statuses on enemies. As we progress through the game, we develop the protagonist and face greater challenges. Wiktor must be cautious, as the stronger he gets, the more his thaumaturge powers drive him to madness...
The Thaumaturge runs on the Unreal Engine 5. The game's atmospheric artstyle and soundtrack effectively recreate the feeling of living in an early 20th century city.

VideoGamer: 6 / 10 by Alex Raisbeck
The Thaumaturge shows plenty of promise, but lets itself down somewhat by failing to play to its strengths. Warsaw and its history and culture is a joy to experience when the game properly engages with it, but an insistent focus on a comparatively dull main story ultimately detracts from this for a fun yet frustrating experience.
Impulsegamer: 4.5 / 5 by Nay Clark
The Thaumaturge feels poetic. There is something about it that just feels confident and purposefully precise. It feels like there was a true ion and drive that is effortlessly showcased through the sophisticated story and gameplay elements. The concept of relying on others misfortunes, downfalls, misery, trauma, tragedies, and impurities to get what you want during this historical tension with Russian rule is captivating to say the least. The combat has a lot of neat ideas that prioritizes strategizing, but it feels like there are too many eggs in one basket and the many choices almost undermine the system to begin with, making fighting a bit humdrum. Some hiccups with the graphics don't deter you away from great aspects of the game like the attractive environments, mesmerizing soundtrack, and gripping decision making. The Thaumaturge is an easy recommendation for anyone looking for an intriguing story with intricate and entertaining gameplay.
Windows Central: 4.5 / 5 by Cole Martin
The Thaumaturge's gritty, demon-taming take on the monster collecting genre is a welcome twist. Taking place in 1905 Poland, there is certainly some language and actions in the game that can feel uncomfortable, but it all works with the overarching theme of struggling with mental health and personal flaws. Despite the sensitive nature of the story, Fool's Theory does well to not over sensationalize traumatic story beats. Gameplay is simple and engaging, and the combat is easy to learn but can be challenging on higher difficulties.
