The murder of the bandit leader Burkhard is the most important element of the quest Portrait in Red from the Brushes with Death story expansion for Kingdom Come 2. In our guide, you will find a complete walkthrough - it explains where the bandits are hiding, what are the main ways to kill Burkhard, and whether killing the bandit leader is mandatory. Additionally, we show how to obtain the killer's helmet, which can be taken to Voyta.

How to unlock the quest?

  1. Portrait in Red is the last main DLC quest before painter Voyta sets off to Kuttenberg. You must first complete the previous quest - Chiaroscuro.
  2. Wait 24 hours (e.g. wait in place or use the bed) and talk again with Voyta. You will learn about Burkhard (more through persuasion) and all options boil down to the same thing - Henry can help the painter get rid of the ruthless murderer.

Optionally, you can also meet with the Bailiff of Troskowitz - Thrush. This man set a bounty on Burkhard. This step is not required to complete Voyta's mission.

Where is the bandits' camp?

  1. You need to head northeast from the Trosky Castle. The bandits' camp is in the forest and you can easily locate it by following the voices of the singing bandits.

Opponents in the camp will attack Henry as soon as they notice him. So it's worth getting prepared - make sure you have good equipment and a full health bar. It might also be a good idea to save the game. It's easy to die in the camp, especially if Henry is surrounded by a group of enemies.

How to eliminate Burkhard?

  1. A more obvious course of action would be to attack the bandits. If you choose this option, focus on defeating Burkhard - you will recognize him by the armor elements and a shield.
  2. Killing Burkhard will cause the remaining bandits to automatically flee. You don't have to keep fighting them.
  1. A less obvious variant is to sneak into the camp at night. Make sure you have taken off armor parts and put on clothes that will facilitate staying hidden.
  2. There are bandits with torches around the camp, but they are easy to spot. Additionally, one of the bandits can sit by the fire in the camp. You can stun or kill enemies (, Voyta would prefer to avoid bloodshed except for killing Burkhard).
  1. In the camp, you can find sleeping Burkhard - perform a stealth attack on him. Make sure in advance that you have a dagger in your equipment to kill the target instantly.

Do you have to kill Burkhard?

  1. An interesting fact is that killing Burkhard is not mandatory to complete the quest. The alternative option is however quite well hidden.
  2. You can lock pick the bandits' chest in their camp - Burkhard has the key with him, but you can also lock pick the lock (medium level). The most important item to find in the chest is the killer's helmet shown in the attached picture.

Report to Voyta

Regardless of the chosen method, you must return to the painter in Trosky Castle. The meeting can proceed in two ways:

  1. If you have killed Burkhard, you can tell the artist about that. Voyta will also ask about the other bandits - you can tell the truth or lie about them (if you have killed them, too).
  2. If you didn't kill Burkhard, you can show the killer's helmet and lie. However, this involves ing a persuasion skill check and it will be rewarded with a hidden achievement.
  1. If you have given the killer's helmet to Voyta (after killing or sparing Burkhard), he will paint the headgear for you and give it back to you (see the picture). Additionally, you will always unlock new symbols to paint on the shield.
  2. You can take this opportunity to ask the painter a lot of questions about his past. This is optional.
  3. The painter will set off to Kuttenberg region. You must have this region unlocked (The Night-Mare.
