Another long-time Xbox exclusive series is making the jump to PlayStation
The Halo Wars.
This real-time strategy series has long been an Xbox exclusive, primarily releasing for PC, but also appearing on Xbox consoles in recent years. This announcement marks the first time that a game from this series will appear on a PlayStation console. On their website, the Age of Empires post reads: “I’m delighted to share that we are giving fans more choice to play where they want by bringing Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition and Age of Mythology: Retold to PlayStation 5.” The more recent title Age of Mythology: Retold will launch first on March 4th, while Age of Empires 2 will launch sometime this Spring.
Both games are also getting new DLC. The Age of Empires team added to the announcement that Age of Mythology: Retold’s Immortal Pillars expansion launches the same day as the game comes to PS5. Alongside the Age of Empires 2 release, the post reads: “we’ll be dropping one of the most exciting DLC expansions for Age II: DE yet, packed with fresh new content, new civilizations for ranked play, and ready for all players to enjoy together across all platforms…” This also seems to suggest that the game will feature crossplay between PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5.
The stream of Xbox Studio games announcing that they will be launching on PlayStation continues to grow. Rumors of a PlayStation State of Play next week could be the first major opportunity for Gears of War: E-Day, have yet to make an announcement, but it continues to feel more and more likely.
Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer also stated intentions to strongly the recently revealed Nintendo Switch 2. Depending on the power available in Nintendo’s new console, it could be a huge platform for Xbox games to be released on as well.
Xbox’s recent Developer Direct was a great showcase, but fans were quick to point out that four of the five games shown are also planned to launch on PlayStation 5. Last week, Xbox released a financial summary of the final months of 2024, showing that Microsoft’s gaming division recorded a 7% decrease in revenue compared to last year. This was led primarily by a 29% drop in sales of Xbox consoles. Xbox is quickly becoming the biggest video game publisher but is falling behind its console competitors just as quickly.
