Today, the first trailer for Cloudheim, a new indie game from former BioWare and EA devs was released. The co-op action-RPG is vibrant, colorful and the fast-paced action is a flurry of airborne combos and magic. Cloudheim boasts a “chaotic physics-based combat” system and allows players to get creative with crafting mechanics as well. With the current state of EA and BioWare, this new trailer speaks volumes.

Former BioWare and EA devs released a vibrant new trailer for Coudheim, a co-op action-RPG

Noodle Cat Games, the new studio behind Cloudheim, was founded in 2022 by David Hunt, who now serves as the CEO. Hunt previously worked as a Senior Designer at BioWare and the Lead Systems Designer at Epic Games. The studo’s website reads: “We make games by weaving trust, creativity, and empathy into everything we do.” Cloudheim is the first glimpse at what this studio has been working on for three years.

This trailer arrives just a week after EA and BioWare are dealing with the fallout of layoffs and the underperformance of their latest action RPG, Mass Effect 5. Especially with the release of this new trailer, it looks like it was a good choice to start an independent studio.

In a press release alongside the trailer, Hunt said “Our core gameplay began with a simple question – what if we take the juggling from fighting games, and make it the combat foundation in a co-op action RPG?” The trailer showcases this, with players launching enemies into the air and unleashing a string of melee combos before smacking them across the room. Cloudheim will allow up to four players to play co-operatively, craft weapons, and build bases.

Cloudheim looks promising, but with this being the first trailer, its success will depend on if the game is able to find an audience. Currently there is no specific release date, but Cloudheim is planned to be released sometime this year. It is planned to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam.
