Squad 9.0 trailer drops with Unreal Engine 5 upgrade - but the new PiP scope replacement looks downright weird
Ready for Squad’s UE5 playtest? Find out why the new scope setting is raising eyebrows.

Another Squad playtest kicks off today as the devs get ready for the big switch to Unreal Engine 5. They also just released a trailer for update 9.0, showing off a totally revamped Al-Basrah map with updated terrain, new urban areas, and smoother tactical flow. Everything looks seriously upgraded, but there’s one feature that definitely feels a bit off.
Squad's UE5 switch in Update 9.0 – a glimpse into the future (and a peculiar scope)
In yesterday’s announcement, the Offworld devs gave a quick reminder on how to the playtest branch and what players should keep in mind while testing. They mentioned the 1FPS bug that causes some frustrating freezes and said they’re trying out new animations designed to ease the strain on servers and improve overall performance.
But what’s really got everyone talking is the new performance setting for scopes. If you’ve been noticing FPS drops whenever you aim down sights, there’s now an option to switch away from the usual PiP (Picture-in-Picture) scopes. And trust me, you’ve got to see the difference for yourself. CC_ACV posted on Reddit a perfect example.
This setting is completely optional, so you can choose whether to use it or not. It’s definitely a helpful option for players on low-end PCs, but still, it does look ridiculous.
Since they’re still testing new things, this might change down the line. The 9.0 version is expected to launch this summer, so there’s probably another playtest coming after the current one. And just a quick heads-up: if you want to this playtest, it starts today, May 30th at 11 AM PDT and runs until June 2nd.
