The renowned strategy series Civilization V. CivilizationEDU is planned to enter high schools in North America in fall, 2017. The goal is to provide students with an engaging and effective tool for helping them understand dependencies between politics, military, technology, and socioeconomics. In order to increase its educational value GlassLab company will provide the program with a learning analytics engine, so to enable the teachers to accurately evaluate students’ problem-solving skills. In an official press release Sid Meier, founder of Firaxis Games, commented:

For the past 25 years, we’ve found that one of the fun secrets of Civilization is learning while you play. We’ve always focused on entertainment first, but we believe that our players – young and old – enjoy learning, even if they don’t always enjoy education. Civilization players find fun in discovering new civilizations, running into famous historical leaders, and charting their own version of human history.  Along the way, players learn valuable lessons from their success and failures and are able to try again, employing different choices and strategies. We’re absolutely thrilled to be partnering with GlassLab and I am excited to see CivilizationEDU in classrooms next year.

There are currently no further details on the actual contents and gameplay of CivilizationEDU, but the primary goal here is to optimize the game for classrooms and make it student- and teacher-friendly. As stated earlier, it is going to be based on the highly-acclaimed Civilization V, which has sold over 8 million copies worldwide. The series managed to move 32 mln units to date. The next installment, Civilization VI, is scheduled to release this fall.
