Valve's gift to players is already paying off. TF 2 Classic is heading to Steam
The popular Team Fortress 2 Classic mod will hit Steam this year, allowing players to experience the not-quite-classic version of this cult FPS.

We have the first results of Valve's recent decision: Team Fortress 2 Classic will appear on Steam as a separate free title.
Let's remind: a week ago, Gabe Newell's company Team Fortress 2 players with a big present. No, not a new update - at least not from Valve. The company has released the latest game development tools (SDK) and permitted their use for developing entirely new projects that could be launched on Steam. Condition: they must be completely free.
Of course, this opened the door for all kinds of fan projects - including those that have existed for a long time. For instance, the most well-known one is Team Fortress 2 Classic, which already has its page on Steam and will be available on Valve's platform this year.
According to the title, this is the "classic" version of TF 2 from its first year after release: lacking many weapons (and hats) from later updates, but featuring content that never made it into the game, such as the Civilian - the tenth playable class, and four-team skirmishes (instead of just two).
On top of that, there are various improvements, including game balance and visuals, and additions like new game modes. The project has significantly evolved since its launch in 2020, which is thanks to the Eminoma team, but also many collaborators. Team Fortress 2 Classic gives free rein to mods and even regular players who want to change the gameplay according to their own vision.
It's not clear when exactly the developer will finish converting TF 2 Classic to the current SDK. The creators hope that the release on Steam will be able to expand the player base - so far the modification was only available for from the official project website.
