The second part of the metroidvania platform game series, launched in 2017. Inspired by the 16-bit hits, Alwa's Legacy takes us to the Alwa land, which we walk through as the heroine named Zoe.
Alwa's Legacy is a metroidvania game, developed in a platformer convention, which is the second part of the series initiated in 2017 by Alwa's Awakening project. This time the Elden Pixels studio decided to prepare a game inspired by hits from the 16-bits era. This game was created thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
Alwa's Legacy takes us to the fantastic land of Alwa. The main heroine is Zoe, who has no idea how she got here, even though everything around her seems strangely familiar to her. Shortly afterwards, the protagonist learns from the mysterious character that she is the only hope to save Alva and her people. With no other choice, the girl decides to embark on a journey full of dangers.
In Alwa's Legacy, we observe the action from the side. During the game, we walk through extensive levels, among which we find both surface locations and extensive underground. Exploring them, equipped with a magic stick, Zoe solves environmental puzzles, jumps on platforms and avoids traps and field obstacles, and fights enemies. As we progress, we unlock improvements for the protagonist, which are useful both during exploration (individual places make up a kind of labyrinth, and access to many of them requires prior unlocking of a particular ability or acquiring a particular item) and during the fight against enemies.
Alwa's Legacy game is in retro style. The graphic design of this game was made in pixel art technique, and the fun goes on to the accompaniment of an ear-catching chiptune soundtrack.

Clever puzzles, a decent story and beautiful pixel graphics make up Alwa’s Legacy‘s strengths. But there’s little here that makes it stand out from a sea of more superior games in the genre. If you enjoy classic Metroidvania-style platforming, Alwa’s Legacy is worth a play – but don’t expect an experience that will blow you away.

Alwa’s Legacy is a whole lot of fun to play, with the enjoyable level design, varied assortment of abilities, and wonderful world coming together to make for a memorable adventure. I had a really good time exploring my surroundings and using my ever-improving abilities to uncover secrets, whilst the battles with bosses always made for neat showdowns too. It does have some imperfections, most notably with the easy to beat enemies, the back-tracking, and the water level (a personal pet peeve… *shudders*), but these are minor issues in what is otherwise an exceptional and very well-designed Metroidvania-style adventure.

Alwa's Legacy may seem like more of the same, but several aspects of its design help it to stand out among its peers. Unfortunately, the manner in which it’s distinct is not always a good thing.
