Among the Trolls

Gameplay

Among the Trolls fits into the typical patterns of survival games. We observe the action from the first-person perspective, and the gameplay is primarily about exploring locations in an open world, where we collect materials needed to create items and try to uncover the secrets of the Finnish forest. It is also necessary to take care of the needs of the hero (or heroine, as we can guide both Alex and Anna). We won't survive long in the wild wilderness without food or water.

The developer also introduced many elements not present in most survival games. The forest in the mountains is inhabited by creatures from Finnish myths, including the titular trolls. From time to time, we need to gain their favor by sacrificing items they need in special places. We should also expect difficulties, not necessarily in the form of attacking beasts - offended mythical creatures can even affect the environment.

In addition to standard stats, heroes also have three additional ones, inherited from their ancestors: Sisu (Vigor), Vaki (Magic) and Lykky (Luck). These exert various influences on other character traits, but also on the environment, resources, and fantasy creatures.

Co-op

Among the Trolls allows to play alone or in cooperative mode for two people.

Engine and music

Among the Trolls was initially developed on the Unity engine, but after a change of developer, the game was transferred to Unreal Engine. The creators wanted to create forests full of authentic sounds of Scandinavian nature. The atmosphere is also built by the soundtrack, combining modern instruments with music from ancient times.
