Battlefield 6 is the first instalment of the famous shooter series to hit the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles. The game was developed by EA DICE studio. The publisher is, as usual, Electronic Arts.
Battlefield 2042 is the next instalment of the bestselling FPS series and the first one developed for the ninth generation consoles - PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The game focuses on multiplayer gameplay. It was developed by EA DICE, the studio responsible for the series, and published by Electronic Arts, which owns the rights to the brand.
As the title suggests, Battlefield 2042 takes us on a journey to the not too distant future. Standing on the brink of war, the United States and Russia have been participating for years in conflicts that are supposed to replace large-scale open warfare. The soldiers, known here as No-Pats, do not formally belong to either side, but they are true specialists and their actions shape the future of the entire world.
In Battlefield 2042 we observe the action from a first-person perspective (FPP). During the game we play as Specialists belonging to four classes characteristic for the series. Each soldier type has a unique trait and a gadget or skill. The rest - equipment taken to the battlefield - can be freely modified and adapted to individual preferences, without the limitations known from previous games. And there is a lot to choose from - the authors give us an extensive arsenal, a wide range of combat gadgets, various vehicles and numerous accessories.
The game gives us in basic game mode seven vast and varied maps at our disposal. Fights take place in urban areas (Songdo, Doha), sandy desert (Egypt) and ice-bound Antarctica. Interestingly, this time the battlefields are constantly changing, both under the influence of military action and as a result of violent atmospheric phenomena, including sandstorms and tornadoes.
The pillar of Battlefield 2042 is the multiplayer mode called All-Out Warfare, where up to 128 players can play at the same time. Here, we can find 7 aforementioned maps, on which we can play matches in Conquest and Breakthrough modes. In addition, a brand new game mode called Hazard Zone is available, where players are dropped into a location to collect data disks from downed satellites. Soldiers are given two chances to evacuate from the battlefield, and only a successful evacuation with the discs captured signifies victory and results in credits allowing for the purchase of better equipment for the next round.
The final game mode available is Battlefield Portal, which at launch allows players to play matches on six classic maps, two each from Battlefield 1942, Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3. Each map has the same gameplay as the original game, including equipment, character classes and even shooting patterns. The mode is set to expand over time with new maps being added. What's more, Battlefield Portal allows players to create servers with their own rules.
Battlefield 2042 offers cross-platform play. This allows players on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PCs to play against each other.
Battlefield 2042 runs on the latest version of Frostbite technology, giving the game the highest quality visuals available. The same can be said about the sound, which remains at the high level known from previous instalments in the series. However, the increase in the number of maps and players forced the developers to limit the destruction of the environment.

Battlefield 2042 uses the climate catastrophe and the subsequent refugee crisis as the backdrop for its fictitious conflict – and yet tries to pretend it doesn't. For AAA games, weirdly understood notion of being apolitical has become sanctity.
Battlefield 1, like the next installments in the series, received new anti-cheat protection. Unfortunately, it has broken the game for Linux and Steam Deck s.

Overall, Battlefield 2042 is a complete package of a first-person shooter that many players will enjoy playing it. Thanks to the Portal mode, the game never disappoints you in delivering diverse game modes, and Hazard Zone is a new option to put more hours into Battlefield, especially for pro players.
GamesRadar+: 3.5 / 5 by Josh West
Battlefield 2042 is a strong foundation for future expansion. DICE's multiplayer-only FPS has scale and spectacle, but there are elements in need of careful refinement and optimization.
Game Rant: 2.5 / 5 by Cameron Corliss
Battlefield 2042 isn't just a lackluster Battlefield game, it's a bad FPS in general. It's an overcorrect after Battlefield 5's marketing was criticized for its "out-there" CGI trailers. It isn't clear what Battlefield 2042 is, or even what it wants to be, beyond a bland step back. One can hope for meaningful content updates later down the line, but the ship is sinking before even leaving port.
