The creators of Talonsoft focus on a narrow section of history, allowing players to take part in the battles that took place at the turn of 1944 and 1945 in the Ardennes forests on the border of , Belgium and Luxembourg.
Battleground: Ardennes is a turn-based war strategy that takes players into one of the most important battles of World War II. The game was designed by John Tiller and is the first production of the American studio TalonSoft, specializing in war games for real strategists.
The offensive in the Ardennes was the last major operation of the German army on the western front. Despite the commitment of the best troops, failed to separate British and American forces, which was supposed to force the allied armies to surrender. Despite their initial successes, they suffered a devastating defeat. Huge losses in equipment and soldiers facilitated the counterattack of the Allies and the subsequent Soviet offensive on the eastern front, which, as it later turned out, was of key importance for the fate of the war.
Battleground: Ardennes includes 23 battles that took place between December 1944 and January 1945 in the Ardennes forest and its surroundings. We can stand in them both on the side of the allied states and on the side of the Axis' troops. In addition, the creators offer 3 special scenarios, based on hypothetical events and a training scenario, which allows you to get acquainted with the mechanics of the game. There is also a mission editor, which allows you to create your own match from scratch and compete with a computer or other player via a modem.
For the purposes of the game, we developed Battleview engine, which allows you to watch the battlefield in a classic top-down perspective, or in isometric view. The fight takes place in a turn-based system, in which we move around the map with icons symbolizing the units. Each unit is described by several parameters, such as firepower, morale and movement speed. Due to the fact that the authors focused on a very narrow fragment of World War II, Battleground: Ardennes is characterized by great attention to detail. In the key moments of the game we can also see FMV sequences, referring to historical events.
