In search of his missing father and sister, the central character will encounter villages whose many inhabitants are in need of a hero. Players can even construct and populate a village of their own. Altogether the story and side-quests are said to take 40 to 50 hours to complete, so make room on your calendar.

Breath of Fire II follows in the illustrious footsteps of the original Breath of Fire, which appeared on the GBA as a fairly faithful port. The story and gameplay in Breath of Fire II are nearly identical to that of the original with turn-based combat, eight characters that your party and creatures called Shamans that create powerful magic spells when ed with certain characters.
