Comanche: Maximum Overkill is a simulator of the American helicopter Boeing/Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche - one of the most modern helicopters in the world, which, due to its high costs, has never been produced in series.
The product developed by NovaLogic is the first simulator powered by the Voxel Space engine, which in the early 1990s brought a revolution in the appearance of the environment. Thanks to the application of the new technology, the areas and objects designed by the authors looked more realistic than what other companies obtained with the use of polygon nets at the time. However, the great emphasis on the visualisation of the programme had a clear impact on other aspects of the game. The flight model used in Comanche: Maximum Overkill has been significantly simplified compared to competing productions, which has not been appreciated by fans of hardcore simulations.
Before starting the game, Comanche: Maximum Overkill allows you to create a virtual pilot, on whose will be saved not only the score achieved, but also statistics of completed and countless tasks. The product offers two campaigns consisting of a total of twenty scenarios. The first set of missions - training - allows you to get acquainted with the helicopter and does not force the player to breakneck feats at the helmets of Comanche. In the second campaign, called Maximum Overkill, the pilot is already thrown into the deep water. The tasks are much more difficult here and require a very good knowledge of the machine's capabilities.
Most of the missions occurring in the game are related to the destruction of objects indicated by the command - these can be both air targets (other helicopters) and ground targets (tanks, armored vehicles). Several weapons are used to exterminate enemies, including the Vulcan cannon and Hellfire rockets. In some scenarios, you can also use wing services, which will attack a selected opponent on command.
Comanche: Maximum Overkill is characterized by excellent low resolution graphics, with the ability to reduce details in case of weaker hardware configurations (a common solution, once a rarity). In addition to the traditional cockpit view, the game features shots from other cameras, including those outside the helicopter. Noteworthy is the soundtrack of the programme, which consists of musical works, various sounds and spoken issues.
