Contra: Legacy of War is the first game in the famous series to use 3D graphics. The game introduced a number of changes, trying to go beyond the formula typical of arcade shooters and previous installments.
Colonel Bassad dreams of conquering the world. He forms an alliance with a powerful alien creature and with its help gathers an army consisting of mercenaries, machines and representatives of alien civilizations. The mission of stopping the man is given to the Hard Corps unit, which is made up of Ray Poward, known from Contra: Hard Corps, well-trained weaspons and combat expert Tasha, the robot CD-288 and the alien Bubba. Together, the depart for the villain's fortress to defeat him once and for all.
Compared to the previous installments of the series, Legacy of War presents the action in isometric projection. This makes battles against numerous enemy forces look completely different and forces us to eliminate targets from all directions - not only from the left or right edge of the screen. To make the task a little easier and increase the chances, the developers equipped the heroes with skills such as strafing and crouching, enabling them to hide behind the elements of the environment. Players have at their disposal four characters with different speed of movement and available equipment. Each soldier has four weapon slots, two of which are permanently occupied by the character's pre-assigned weapons.
The devs have prepared the option of split-screen co-op mode, which is an element characteristic of the whole series since its beginning in the eighties of the 20th century. The players can complete the campaign together in the multiplayer mode.
Contra: The Legacy of War was distributed with a pair of anaglyph glasses, which gave the illusion of 3D visuals.
