An FPS with elements of a survival horror, a metroidvania and an immersive sim. Deepest Fear takes us to a vast underwater complex where a hostile ancient force was released. We must deal not only with deadly monsters, but also with hectoliters of water simulated in real time.
Deepest Fear is an FPS enriched with elements of survival horror, immersive sim and metroidvania. The game was developed by the Variable State team, whose portfolio includes games such as Last Stop.
The main sources of inspiration for the creators included the films The Thing, The Abyss, The Fly and Total Recall, as well as the games Dead Space.
Deepest Fear takes us to the retrofuturistic research facility Neptune, located deep under the ocean. The main character of the game is doctor Danni Carrol. Her father, working on a secret project, awakened an ancient dark force threatening the world. After the military lost control of this facility, the protagonist was forced to go there to attempt to find her father and stop the nightmare he had unleashed.
In Deepest Fear we view the action from a first-person perspective (FPP). The gameplay takes place in an underwater complex, the rooms and corridors of which form something like a vast labyrinth. Although access to many of them is only possible after meeting certain conditions (such as obtaining a specific item or solving a puzzle), sometimes simple improvisation can also lead us to places that are not immediately accessible.
The physics engine implemented in the game simulates the behavior of water in real time. Thanks to it, the game can realistically fill rooms with water, similar to what was the case in the game Hydrophobia released in 2010. Hectoliters of liquid pose a danger to us, being able to sweep us away in an unpredictable direction.
To make matters worse, aggressive monsters can crawl out of the water at any moment, so we should never let our guard down. We fight the monsters attacking us, making use of firearms like a pistol or a rifle. We also get our hands on improvised tools and the spoils of exotic technology.
Deepest Fear is powered by Unreal Engine 5.
