Elite: Dangerous for PC, XONE and PS4 is the fourth installment in a series of open-world space simulators. The game was created by Frontier Developments - a team led by David Braben.

Plot

The action is set in distant future, when humanity managed to colonize countless stellar systems. The game world is dominated by three superpowers, namely the Empire, the Federation and the Alliance. However, these entities are not in control over the entirety of inhabited space - not even the majority of it. Beyond the areas controlled by the three dominant factions, anarchy and lawlessness is commonplace and potential profits which can be made here are frequently worth the risk.

Simulation

A set of official expansions to the space simulator released back in 2014 by the Frontier Developments studio. The package has been collectively named Elite: Dangerous – Horizons, and comprises of several consecutively developed add-ons, which will enhance the game by adding additional content. The first expansion is called Planetary Landings and allows the players to land on the surfaces of specific planets, which have been designed in an extremely credible manner and scale. Before we choose the area of our landing, we can conduct a scan of the surface, revealing any crashed machines, resources or enemies. Additionally, the developers have supplied the players with a special vehicle – the Scarab, which preforms extraordinarily in a variety of environments and can be used both for exploration and combat. When it comes to technical matters, the Frontier Developments studio has made sure that we can transition fluently between the surface area of a planet and vastness of space, without any in-game loading screens.

Despite a solid framework for an incredible game, right now the title can feel barren and lacking in variety

GamesBeat: 83 / 100 by Dan Crawley

Elite: Dangerous is unforgiving, obfuscating, and occasionally dull, but it's always immersive and beautiful. It offers an incredible universe to explore that, despite occasional graphical repetition, offers the tantalising possibility of wonders yet unseen at the end of each new hyperspace jump.

Eurogamer: 8 / 10 by Dan Whitehead

There's a lot of balancing to be done in the long term, then, and the big hurdle for new players will be getting up to speed without losing interest in those stodgy early hours. The mid-point, where everything coalesces, is so liberating, so brilliant in its scope and possibility, that it's hard to be too upset about these wrinkles. For all its frustrations, you'll spend much longer in the sweet spot than you spend getting there. Elite: Dangerous demands much, but repays your devotion many times over.
