Release Date: July 25, 2019
An independent fighting game developed for both beginners and veteran fans of the genre. During the game, the players can control varied warriors who fight on small arenas.
Fantasy Strike is a fighting game developed by an independent studio Sirlin Games. It isn’t the first project of this company – it previously developed titles like Puzzle Strike and Yomi. The latter was an unorthodox hybrid of a card game and a fighting game.
The game was developed for casual and veteran fighting game players and it is available on platforms like PS4, PC, and Switch. The general principles are similar to the ones present in other fighting games. The players are taken to a small arena, where they must defeat their opponent within the time limit. The enemy is controlled by the artificial intelligence or by another player. The developers created a few different warriors with unique powers. For example, the players can use an artist, an archer, a man accompanied by a ghost, or a hero who can transform into a dragon.
Fantasy Strike is a 2,5D game. This means that all arenas and characters are three-dimensional, but the battles are fought in two dimensions. The warriors can move to the left and to the right, and they can jump or crouch. The number of attacks is quite limited and the combos are rather easy to perform. However, the game was developed with tournaments in mind, so although it is easy to learn the basics, mastering the game requires time and skills.
It is worth mentioning that Fantasy Strike was originally designed for PC and because of that, it can be comfortably played with a keyboard. The game also s other controllers, including classic gamepads and the guitar from the Guitar Hero series.
Fantasy Strike features a few classic gameplay modes. Among them, there is a quick duel, local and online multiplayer, practice mode, and Arcade mode. During the Internet play, the game uses GGPO technology that is popular among the fighting games developers – it was also used in games like Killer Instinct. It limits lags during the matches.
Fantasy Strike features graphics of satisfying quality. The game uses a cartoon-like style, the warriors are animated quite nice, and some attacks are accompanied by various special effects.

GameSpew: 6 / 10 by Richard Seagrave
If you really are new to fighting games, Fantasy Strike is worth giving a go. But you’re probably going to want to move onto something a little more advanced fairly quickly.
Nintendo Life: 8 / 10 by PJ O'Reilly
Fantasy Strike isn’t going to blow anyone away aesthetically and its arcade mode is a little barebones. However, in of gameplay, it absolutely achieves what it sets out to, offering fun and accessible fighting action to newcomers whilst at the same time possessing enough technical depth in its roster of characters to keep more seasoned fighters interested.
Chalgyr's Game Room: 7.5 / 10 by Nick Herber
I think what I appreciate most about Fantasy Strike is that the developers set out for a specific task - make a fun, accessible fighting game - and did just that. It looks and sounds nice enough, and there is more depth than initially meets the eye, which helps as well. The primary quibble is the overall lack of content, but if you are just looking for a quick fighting game fix, Fantasy Strike should scratch that itch rather nicely.
