An expansive RTS developed by Crate Entertainment- the creators of bestselling Grim Dawn. Farthest Frontier tasks us with developing a settlement from a small wooden village to a thriving city.
Farthest Frontier is a complex RTS with an extensive economic layer, set in a world inspired by the European Middle Ages. It was developed by indie studio Crate Entertainment, also responsible for a bestselling hack'n'slash Grim Dawn.
Farthest Frontier has us play as the leaders of a settlement on the edge of the known world. Our goal is to develop this small wooden village into a thriving city.
There are many duties we must fulfill throughout the game. One of the most important is resource gathering, as we need resources to construct buildings. There are more than fifty different facilities to build, ranging from houses, public buildings, workshops (that can produce over sixty unique items, warehouses, to defense buildings such as barracks to recruit soldiers at (though we must also properly equip them), watchtowers and palisades (later on replaced by stone walls). Walls are important, as soon enough our settlement may come under attack from enemies and looters. Additionally, production buildings can be upgraded, increasing their capabilities.
Acquiring food is also important. We'll produce it mainly via farming (though hunting and fishing are also worth your attention). We must decide which crops to grow in each field while ing about crop rotation to keep the soil usable. Once we've met our people's needs we can start selling surplus goods. Different regions are willing to pay different prices for specific items.
Even if we don't make any mistakes, our town can still suffer due to external factors. Heat and frost (and hungry deer) can destroy even the most well-tended crops, bears threaten our people and our food reserves, while cutting down too many trees can cause the land to dry up. As if that weren't enough, we must also worry about diseases. Lack of clean water may lead to dysentery and cholera outbreaks, lack of proper clothing and footwear to tetanus and rabies, while not keeping rats in check (which grow in numbers due to waste on the streets and not securing food) can bring black death.
Farthest Frontier features colorful, detailed visuals. The buildings are detailed, the environment is densely vegetated, the seasons and the time of day change gradually as well.
