FIFA 97 is the next installment of the series of sports games, created by EA Sports and referring to the football theme. For the first time in the history of the series, the bitmap figures of players have been replaced by fully three-dimensional models, which were made using the innovative MotionBlending technique (the popular footballer David Ginola used as a model at that time).

The game offers the following gameplay modes: friendly match, league competitions (represented by several dozen teams from 11 countries plus all national teams included in the programme), and the World Cup tournament with qualification and play-off phase. In addition to grass battles, FIFA 97 s can also compete in a hall with slightly different rules than on traditional turf (no possibility to kick the ball out of the pitch, fewer players, etc.). As usual in the case of Electronic Arts products, players have considerable possibilities to intervene in both tactical solutions (also during the game) and a set of options, changing the basic aspects of the game (length of the game, including fouls, so-called "burnt" or injured players).
