Flatspace II: The Rise of the Scarrid is a sequel to a 2003 space simulation by the independent studio Cornutopia. The action of the game is set in the distant future, and the player once again becomes a witness to the conflict between people and the alien race - scarrid. The game focuses on trade, but the game is diversified by elements of cRPG and arcade shooter.
Flatspace II: The Rise of the Scarrid is the result of more than a year of efforts by the independent Cornutopia studio. Bold by the success of the original published in 2003, British developers have prepared a continuation introducing a number of new elements of the gameplay.
Flatspace II: The Rise of the Scarrid takes place after the events presented in the first part of the game. There is a Cold War between people and a race of aliens called scarridas. Both factions use the same technology, but are unable to communicate, which is the cause of frequent tensions. In addition, governments lavishly pay for capturing or killing hostile parties. Unstable times, however, are an excellent opportunity for courageous and enterprising....
The player chooses the side of the conflict, which will be favorable, and his goal is to destroy the enemy bases. This, however, requires a correspondingly large financial outlay, the key to which turns out to be commercial activity. Not insignificant are also the skills of piloting star ships and fighting enemies.
The game combines elements of space simulator, economic strategy, cRPG (such as rogue-like games) and arcade. The creators have prepared more than 100 models of units, which can be controlled by the player from distant corners of the Universe - from small frigates, through various transporters, to huge space stations. In addition, each ship can be modernized by changing armour, armour and technical parameters.
New elements introduced in Flatspace II: The Rise of the Scarrid include artifacts and guild system. Developers from Cornutopia have also improved the balance of the game, reduced the amount of damage inflicted on ships and eliminated accidental negative events leading to the immediate death of a character created by the player.
From the visual side of Flatspace II: The Rise of the Scarrid is not much different from the first part of the cycle released two years earlier. The game still has a modest, two-dimensional graphic design, and the events are presented in a top-down view, characteristic of arcade shooters from the 80s of the last century.
