Four Last Things is an unusual, funny point & click adventure in 2D, which was prepared on the basis of fragments of works from the Renaissance era. Its creator, Joe Richardson, presents his game with the words "a bit like Monkey Island, if it had been created in the 16th century Flemish Region by the time traveler Monthy Python's fanboy".
Four Last Things is a Monthy Python-like two-dimensional point & click adventure game, based on public domain works from the Renaissance - fragments of images and music. Independent producer Joe Richardson is responsible for the creation of this title. The game started as a project for the Game Jolt's Adventure Jam 2016 competition, but it turned into a full-fledged game thanks to a crowdfunding campaign.
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. God saw all that he had made, and it was good. Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. 'Ooops,' said god, seeing he had created a fool. But before he was able to remedy his error, the man spoke; 'No backsies!' he chirped and scuttled off into the forest.
This short summary, published by the author on the official website of the title, presents well the comic world of Four Last Things. In this production, players take on the role of a traveler who arrives in a medieval town in search of salvation. Unfortunately, it turns out that the parish cannot give him what he wants because.... he has not sinned on its territory. Fortunately, there is a simple solution to this problem....
Four Last Things is a typical point & click adventure game. This means that gameplay is based on exploration and interacting with the world in various ways - the latter usually boils down to talking to characters or picking up or using objects needed to solve subsequent riddles and push forward the plot. In Joe Richardson's production we can only play solo.
What really distinguishes Four Last Things from similar games is the unusual visuals design. It was prepared based on public domain (in other words, those available for free - of course when it comes to their digital use) painting by such artists as Hieronim Bosch or Peter Bruegel the Elder. Joe Richardson has mixed various fragments of the works together, creating a unique combination, additionally enriched with his own animations, which enliven the static maps and character silhouettes. The game also features fragments of music created by classical composers.
