A survival game with a first-person camera, developed by the creators of Barotrauma. In Frostrail we explore the frosty wasteland on board a train serving us a means of transportation and a fortress. We often have to explore our surroundings, fighting monsters and searching for resources necessary for survival.

Frostrail is the second project of FakeFish studio after the game Barotrauma from 2023 (released in early access in 2019). The pillars of the gameplay are the same here - they revolve around cooperation and the struggle for survival. The genre convention and the realities are things that have changed.

Gameplay

Frostrail is an action game in which events are presented from a first-person perspective (FPP).

Mobile fortress on tracks

Our command center is a train that serves both as our base of operations and a fortress where we can take shelter from enemies. It is also our main way of transportation. The train needs fuel to operate, and in order to obtain it, we must regularly stop and disembark to plunder the surroundings. Such escapades are also a source of other, equally useful resources.

Dangerous land expeditions

The matter is complicated by the fact that we can only feel relatively safe inside the wagons. We can explore the ruined world where we can find abandoned settlements and industrial complexes, but we must constantly be on guard. The threat to us comes not only from aggressive opponents, with whom we can confront using melee weapons and firearms, but also from weather conditions (led by the penetrating cold forcing us to search for sources of heat).

Given that we rarely have enough ammunition, and enemies often outnumber us, we frequently need to hurry to fill our pockets with useful items and flee in case of detection, so as not to fall victim to our opponents.

Upgrading the train

Exploring our surroundings can be profitable. The further inland we manage to venture, the more valuable rewards may await us. Apart from fuel, we are talking about resources that are used to improve the train, including strengthening the armor, creating new carriages with workshops, warehouses and weapon stations, as well as upgrading the locomotive (like improving its acceleration).

Story

Frostrail takes us to a fictional empire. After its ruler made a pact with the Abyss, it turned into a frosty wasteland, haunted by specters. During the game, we embody the so-called Penitent Gardeners. Their goal is to cleanse the land of all filth, because as they believe, it will ensure their salvation.
