Release Date: September 13, 2018
A full-fledged continuation of a science-fiction turn-based strategy developed by Mode 7 Games. In its premise, Frozen Synapse 2 doesn’t differ much from what its predecessor offered, and focuses on combat using small units, emphasizing strategic planning. The main distinguishing element of the game (and the whole series) is the fact that the encounters are turn-based, but the players make their moves simultaneously, rather than alternately.
Frozen Synapse 2 for PC is a full-fledged continuation of a science-fiction tactical turn-based strategy, released in 2011 for PCs and mobile devices. The previous installment received an upgraded edition – Frozen Cortex – a spin-off focusing on turn-based matches of futuristic American football.
In its general idea, Frozen Synapse 2 mechanics haven’t changed much in relation to the predecessor, and focuses on tactical encounters of small units, placing special emphasis on strategic planning. The main distinguishing element of the game (and the whole series) is that the battles are turn-based, but the players (or the player and the AI) make their moves simultaneously, rather than alternately. Such solution forces a completely different approach from the player, and requires the ability of forseeing the enemy’s movements.
In contrast to the original Frozen Synapse, its continuation is characterized by a much more open world, and bigger maps are a direct result of this. This is a deciding factor on the strategic element of the gameplay, as the encounters in the previous installments took place in a relatively small locations.
Similarly to its predecessor, Frozen Synapse 2 for PC offers a campaign mode for single players, but the real fun can be found in the multiplayer variant, where players can clash with each other in a number of different gameplay modes.
Frozen Synapse 2 for PC uses a similar visual style to its predecessor released five years ago. The action is seen from a classic top-down view, while the whole game is kept in a stern atmosphere and a rather cold colour palette. The soundtrack was created by Paul Taylor, also known under his internet alias, nervous_testpilot.
