Galactic Civilizations IV: Megastructures is the fourth (and third non-standalone) expansion for the turn-based 4X space strategy game, released in 2022. The expansion was developed by Stardock Entertainment, a company that has been overseeing the development of the series from the beginning.

Story

Galactic Civilizations IV: Megastructures introduces new missions and events during which we discover the so-called Ruined Ringworlds and explore them in search of ancient technology. New technologies allow us to make breakthroughs related to the titular megastructures, i.e. gigantic constructions that can provide a significant advantage over the competition.

New features in the expansion

Megastructures

The biggest innovations introduced in Galactic Civilizations IV: Megastructures are, of course, the titular megastructures. Building them involves facing different challenges. Nevertheless, it is worth it, as having such an object opens up completely new possibilities for us.

Dyson Sphere – surrounding a star, it captures almost all of the energy it produces, which powers all our endeavors. The energy potential of these structures is determined by the color of their parent stars;
Stellar Nexus – the megastructure that is the center of our civilization. Its effects vary depending on which of the Nexus Augments we will install in it;
Stellar Gateways – portals of sorts connecting distant black holes. Their use allows us to significantly accelerate expansion and expand the network of trade routes, as well as establish new alliances, under the so-called Open Gateways Treaty;
Ringworlds – ring-shaped structures built around stars, capable of accommodating large populations. Especially useful in those corners of space where there aren't too many planets suitable for habitation.

Other novelties

For the purposes of the described expansion, orbital improvements have been prepared for our colonies. In addition, this expansion allows us to build larger and more powerful ships. The list of new features is topped by previously unavailable diplomatic interactions, as well as alliances and disputes leading to wars.

Coop and other game modes

Similar to the base version of the game, in Galactic Civilizations IV: Megastructures we can play alone or in multiplayer mode over the Internet. The add-on allows for cooperation or competition with other players.

Technical aspects

Galactic Civilizations IV: Megastructures is not a standalone expansion, so it requires the base version of the game Galactic Civilizations IV.
