Gary Grigsby's War Between the States for PC is a turn-based strategy game by 2BY3 Games, founded by Gary Grigsby, a game developer, who has worked on over 30 historical games. War Between the States is set during one of the most famous conflicts — the American Civil War, taking place in today's U.S. Between 1861 and 1865.
Mechanics
You play as a leader of one of the Civil War factions — the Union or the Confederacy — and, with the help of your subordinates, try to gain economic and military advantage over the enemy forces. The game takes place on a 2D map, which you use to plan your moves and move your troops — visualized as e.g. infantry and cavalry icons — around. You also need to check the statistics regarding your territories or armament, and you defend the claimed areas by building fortifications. In the meantime, you send scouts to explore the enemy territory and disperse the fog of war.
An important factor is choosing generals, who lead your troops into battle. Those generals heavily influence your soldiers' speed, offensive and defensive capabilities, and initiative. The game included about a thousand of authentic historical generals, who can turn the tide of many a battle.
