Gettysburg: The Tide Turns offers a number of scenarios, building an extensive campaign which allows the players to control the forces of the North, as well as the Confederacy. Our job is to conduct turn-based battles on the hexagonal grid covering the maps.

Gettysburg: The Tide Turns for PC and iOS is a turn-based recreation of the famous battle of Gettysburg, developed by Shenandoah, the genre enthusiasts known from Crisis in Command series and Battle of the Bulge.

Plot

As per the title, the game recreates the Battle of Gettysburg – the turning point of The Civil War. The battle took place between 1 and 3 July of 1863, and is known as the bloodiest clash of the conflict. The authors, in face of an event of such magnitude, have decided to divide the game into a number of separate scenarios that create one, coherent campaign. Aside from the main course, the developers added a selection of single missions for unsated players. The game allows to see the conflict from both sides – leading the Union, or fighting for the Confederacy.

Mechanics

In Gettysburg: The Tide Turns, the gameplay focuses on conducting turn-based battles on hexagonal maps. The player has to trust the chain of command – the battles are large in scale, and instead of leading single soldiers, we issue orders to whole divisions. The authors put a lot of emphasis on historical consistency, so the battlefield is manned by the same divisions which fought the real battle, while each encounter is influenced by elements such as landforms or soldiers’ morale.

The game is characterized by randomized turns. In standard turn-based games, the order of movement is fixed – both sides issue orders to all their troops one after another. In Gettysburg: The Tide Turns, the order of turns is randomized, while some units may not be able to move in the given turn. This introduces a level of unpredictability to the game, and forces the players to be elastic when planning a move.

Gettysburg: The Tide Turns for PC and iOS is a highly complex title, but the authors have introduced extensive tutorials that ease up the process of getting into the game, and allow simple ingestion of all rules and details. At the same time, the veterans of the genre can access the data regarding all the rules applied in the game.
