Grimm: Dark Legacy is based on the popular NBC television series and it was created by Artplant, the creators of Battlestar Galactica Online. Gameplay mechanics and style of the title are similar to the highly praised survival game Don’t Starve.
Grimm: Dark Legacy is a survival RPG game with advanced online features. The title is based on the popular NBC television series which was inspired by the stories of Grimm brothers. The title has official license from the Universal corporation and was released by in a free-to-play distribution model on PC. It was created by Norwegian studio Artplant, the creators of the well received Battlestart Galactica Online.
In the mentioned Grimm television series, the main protagonist was Nick Burkhardt – a policeman from Portland, who discovers that he is the descendant of an ancient group of hunters known as Grimm. Their task is to maintain the balance between regular humans and magic creatures living among them and called Wesens. The plot of the game takes place hundreds of years before the events shown in the television series. The player assumes the role of a novice Grimm who has little knowledge and unimpressive equipment. He gradually learns about the world in which he lives and becomes familiar with his role in it.
The gameplay mechanics of Grimm: Dark Legacy for PC are similar to the ones used in such games like How to Survive. The gameworld is divided into regions that are explored along the progress in the game. In each region players can freely explore, obtain various resources and interact with non-playable characters. From time to time one can return to hub cities in order to restock supplies and trade various items. In order to complete each level, one must complete specific quests. At first, it will be simple actions like killing a specific number of animals, obtaining materials needed for creating an equipment part or surviving for a period of time. As one obtains new knowledge and better equipment, later in the game the challenges become much harder and the main task is to track and kill various types of Wesens who have unique abilities.
The survival aspect is important in the game. Players must constantly make sure that they have food by hunting various animals, gathering fruits and mushrooms etc. The game also has crafting system. After obtaining specific blueprints one can create necessary items, including potions that are useful in combat and various weapon types, frequently based on gadgets from the television series. The combat is similar to hack-and-slash games and each opponent (both animals and Wesens) has unique parameters which determine his resistance, type of damage and other factors. During combat player must be very careful, especially since dying can be very painful – it means losing all equipment gathered in the area.
Despite the fact that it is only possible to play Grimm: Dark Legacy for PC through internet, the game isn’t a typical online production. It is rather a survival RPG with multiplayer mode option. During most of the game (especially during the early levels) one can easily play the title alone. As player progress in the game and the difficulty level rises, he can form a group and together with other players complete the challenges.
Grimm: Dark Legacy released on PC has interesting, cartoonish graphics, style of which is similar to the previously mentioned Don’t Starve series. The action is shown in an isometric perspective, similarly as in classic hack-and-slash games. Fans of the Grimm television series should be interested in the fact that the game allows them to obtain new, interesting information about the Grimms and about various types of Wesens.
