Players have the opportunity to command a fleet of carefully reproduced vessels from the era and take part in a series of spectacular sea battles.
Ironclads: Chincha Islands War 1866 is the fourth installment of a series of turn-based marine strategies developed by Totem Games. This time the developers decided to bring the historical conflict between Spain and its former colonies closer to the players.
The action of the game takes place in the 60s of the 19th century. In order to regain lost influence in South America, the Kingdom of Spain decides to occupy the Chinese Islands, which are extremely important from the point of view of Peru's economy. However, with the of Chile, Ecuador and Bolivia's neighbours, the Peruvian navy manages to inflict serious damage on the Spaniards who are retreating to the Philippines. After strengthening their fleet in 1866, the Peruvians sent ships to destroy Spanish ships. Meanwhile, a new armada from the Iberian Peninsula is already sailing towards South America. After all, both sides of the conflict the war on the Chinese Islands.
From a gameplay point of view, Ironclads: Chincha Islands War 1866 replicates solutions known from earlier releases of the cycle. The player's task is to build an optimal fleet (taking into the limited economic possibilities) and lead it to victory in a series of sea battles. The latter are played in turn-based mode.
The developers of the game put a lot of emphasis on compliance with historical realities. This applies in particular to the available models of ships, which have been carefully reproduced not only in appearance, but also in technical parameters (speed, manoeuvrability, fire range, thickness of armour, etc.) and combat tactics.
On the technical side, Ironclads: Chincha Islands War 1866 is based on the engine used in previous series games. The visual setting was made correctly, but its level is clearly different from the standards of modern production. However, this is justified in relatively low hardware requirements.
