Kenshi is a sandbox combination of a real-time strategy game and a role-play. It is the debut title of the independent British studio Lo-Fi Games. The game was released on PC.

Mechanics

Kenshi for PC takes place in a reality that combines post-apocalyptic themes and oriental influences. The game features only a singleplayer mode. The player can control a single character or up to fifty characters simultaneously. The characters don’t have to remain close to each other. If the player wants to, he or she can send them to various distant locations.

The game world is gigantic and it features 400 square kilometers of areas. The player can move through long distances by using a quick travel system similar to one in Fallout – the progress of the party can be observed on a map. The virtual reality of the game is fully dynamic. The non-playable characters and factions that inhabit the land are living their own lives, even if the player has no with them.

An intriguing RPG/Survival hybrid sandbox that invites you to experiment in the world it presents. Some technical hiccups interrupt the open world and the freeform nature definitely isn't for everyone but if you are after something different, Kenshi is the very definition of that.

Kenshi has hard difficulty. Kenshi is bugged as hell. Kenshi demands patience. But in return, Kenshi offers opportunities and freedom that you won’t find anywhere in the RPG genre. If Kenshi was a AAA title with an unlimited budget, huge team, and high-quality design it would deserve a much higher praise.

Chalgyr's Game Room: 7.5 / 10 by Robert Risdon

Kenshi is a unique blend of pure squad-based RPG leveling set in a sandbox world where your goal is to first survive then thrive and it is an extremely difficult title. Not only is it difficult it is also extraordinarily complex yet with an dated but useful interface that leaves no vital information too far out of grasp, with graphics that are both complex and at times, stunning while reminiscent of mid-late 2000's isometric viewpoint RPG titles (I believe it has graphics comparable to those found in the Dungeon Siege franchise) yet do not let the graphics fool you; Kenshi is deep and highly complex and at times feels like a management / sim game with RPG aspects built into it. This is a good thing and the brilliant mix of various game genres has me eyeballing their update notes as I am itching to get back in there … even if it means my squad ends up eaten by cannibals.
