Labyrinth of the Demon King is an action-adventure dungeon crawler, enriched with distinctly outlined elements of survival horror games. J.R. Hudepohl, an independent developer from New Zealand, is behind the creation of this game.

Gameplay

In Labyrinth of the Demon King we view events from a first-person perspective (FPP).

Fighting grotesque enemies

During the game, we explore the titular maze erected by the Demon King, and our main activity is fighting opponents. We make use of both melee weapons, such as katanas or naginatas (a type of pole weapon), as well as bows or muskets. On our way, we encounter grotesque opponents in the form of Yokai, which are demons from Japanese folklore.

Combat takes place in real time. We must not only launch attacks with weapons and kicks, but also parry blows and perform dodges. The matter is complicated by the fact that we have a limited amount of stamina, which gradually regenerates. It is worth keeping its indicator at an optimal level, so as not to be caught off guard by the opponent.

Exploration of the labyrinth, puzzles and characters

During exploration, we also need to look carefully for useful items. We can find both armors and talismans that increase our chances of survival, as well as various hints. These last ones are especially useful when solving puzzles that block our way forward. From time to time we meet NPCs with whom we can talk, and sometimes also trade.

Siliconera: 7 / 10 by Jenni Lada

There are times when I wish the Labyrinth of the Demon King gameplay might be a little more responsive or certain elements a little less fiddly, but the aesthetic and graphics are always on-point.

Labyrinth of the Demon King offers familiar first-person retro dungeon crawling, but distinguishes itself with its overpowering-almost unbearable-mood of dread.

Nintendo Life: 8 / 10 by Mitch Vogel

Labyrinth of the Demon King does a great job of providing an authentic action-horror, dungeon-crawling experience that feels like it's straight out of 1997 in all the best ways. The eerie, lo-fi visuals, punishing combat, and disorienting dungeon layouts all combine to make for a maze worth solving. We'd give this one a strong recommendation to any fans of Soulslike games who want to try something with similar traits, but that also feels different in some key ways. This is a great experience if you're willing to stick it out and learn its intricacies.

  • Engaging Combat: The combat system, while simple, is described as satisfying and rewarding. Players appreciate the need for strategic timing with dodging and parrying, as well as the variety of weapons available.
  • Exploration and Puzzles: Many players enjoyed the exploration aspect, comparing it to classic survival horror games like *Resident Evil* and *Silent Hill*. The puzzles are generally well-designed and fit into the overall flow of the game.
  • Storytelling and Lore: The game incorporates elements of Japanese folklore, which adds depth and intrigue to the narrative, even if the story itself is somewhat light.

The main cons of the game

  • Difficulty Balance: Some players felt the game started off challenging but became too easy as they progressed, especially after upgrading weapons. There is a lack of penalty for dying, which diminishes the tension.

  • Inventory Management: The inventory system was described as clunky, making it difficult to manage items effectively. Some players also mentioned the abundance of consumables, which made resource management less meaningful.

  • New Game Plus (NG+) Mode: Many players expressed a desire for a NG+ mode to encourage replayability and to explore different playstyles with upgraded weapons.
  • More Depth in Combat: While the combat is generally well-received, some s wished for more complexity and challenge, particularly in boss fights, which they found to be too easy.
  • Improved UI and Navigation: Suggestions for a more polished interface and better inventory management options were common, as some elements felt like placeholders.
  • Expanded Story Elements: Some players wanted more narrative depth, character development, and lore to enhance the overall experience.
