Release Date: September 3, 1998
A tactical action game with stealth features, developed by Konami, as well as continuation of the Metal Gear series, which began over a decade earlier on 8-bit MXS computers. The story takes place in the not-so-far future and tells about an attack of a dangerous terrorist organization on a secret military base in Alaska.
Metal Gear Solid for PC is a tactical action game with stealth elements, developed by a Japanese company Konami led by Hideo Kojima. The game is the continuation of Metal Gear series, which two entries have been released in 1987-1990 on 8-bit MSX computers. It has been originally released for the original PlayStation console in 1999.
The story takes place during the near future, and tells about attack of terrorist organization, Next-Generation Special Forces, on a secret military base. Terrorists threaten to launch nuclear assault if their demands wont’ be met. We play as a veteran of special forces - Solid Snake, known from previous games. His task is to infiltrate the base, rescue hostages and kill the terrorists. To avoid detection, Snake will have to work by himself.
Even though the environment has been created in full 3D, the game mechanics are close to identical to its two-dimensional predecessors, focusing on tactics and smartness, over brutal force and direct exchange of fire, and Snake has to go through locations without alarming guards and security cameras. Aside from the stealth elements, there are still sequences that force a Snake to open fire – both from third, and first person perspective. Those include battles against bosses - each with some weak spots, which are the key to defeating them. Our character can run, climb, swim, enter boxes, or sneak behind guards unnoticed. We are given 10 different weapons and a vast arsenal of items useful in missions, such as NV goggles, gas masks or, explosives.
An interesting addition is the introduction of the VR Mode, in which players can practice hiding techniques, using weapons and sneaking. Unfortunately, the PC version of the game has been slightly stripped-down compared to original. Not only is there no option of saving VR Mode replays, and some other bonuses available from main menu, but an entire boss fight has been changed due to hardware differences.

In the first Metal Gear Solid, each rat was supposed to have a name, and Snake was originally to be able to befriend them. However, this wouldn't stop him from shooting the rodents in a certain boss fight that would make them increase in size.
