A third-person jRPG developed by Atlus' subsidiary, Studio Zero. Metaphor: ReFantazio is set in a fantasy world. We play as a young man, whose task is to save the Euchronia kingdom. We explore the world and engage in combat - both in real-time and using a turn-based system.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is a jRPG game, formerly codenamed Project Re Fantasy. The game was developed by Atlus' Studio Zero team, headed by Katsura Hashino, a renowned Japanese video game director and producer. His portfolio includes some of the installments in the Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir.
Plot
Metaphor: ReFantazio takes us on a journey to a fantasy world, or more precisely – to the kingdom of Euchronia. Despite its splendor, the kingdom is consumed by corruption, racism and exploitation. To make matters worse, the ruler of this land was murdered, and the only heir to the throne was poisoned as a result of a failed assassination attempt.
During the game we play as a young man from the hated Elda tribe. Upon hearing of the elections for a new ruler, the protagonist sets off on a journey across Euchronia to gain the of the land's inhabitants on behalf of the comatose prince and find a way to save their friend.
How the fate of the hero unfolds (and consequently - what future awaits the whole Euchronia), largely depends on our actions and the decisions we make. The protagonist will not be condemned to a solitary journey, as he will be accompanied by the fairy Gallica and other characters who, like him, want to restore order and peace in their homeland.
Gameplay
In Metaphor: ReFantazio we view the action from a third-person perspective (TPP). The rhythm of our adventure is set by the calendar and the time of day. During the day we traverse locations, among which vast dungeons (Palaces) are the most prominent, as well as complete various tasks and search for treasures. After dark we cultivate relationships with companions and develop characters, preparing them to face increasingly greater challenges.
We have a limited amount of time, so the prospect of focusing solely on the main missions may seem tempting, but there are various rewards for completing side quests - from money, through better equipment, to experience points. Our base of operations is the Gauntlet Runner, a steampunk ship on board which we travel across Euchronia.
We often have to reach for our weapons in the game. There is an original combat system available. The first phase of each skirmish takes place in real time, during which we beat the enemy, having a chance to eliminate them (in the case of weaker opponents) or stun them (in the case of stronger enemies). The next step is to move on to the turn-based phase, in which we must demonstrate tactical sense and knowledge of the adversaries' weak points.
Archetypes
In Metaphor: ReFantazio a system of so-called Archetypes has been implemented. They are sources of power providing access to specific types of skills. We develop individual Archetypes by using them and by entering into relationships with characters. Interestingly, abilities unlocked as we progress can be transferred between different Archetypes, creating unique, often unusual combinations. Additionally, two Archetypes resonating with each other can use so-called synthesis skills on the battlefield, which can change the course of many battles.
Romances
Although in Metaphor: ReFantazio we build bonds with team , there is no romance to be found in the game. The reason for this is the desire to show the relationship between the ruler and the people ing him. According to the creators, love themes would not fit very well there.
Demo version

Quest Daily: 10 / 10 by Shaun Fullard
I’m not going to beat around the bush, Metaphor: ReFantazio is my game of the year. Atlus and Studio Zero have taken the best bits of the Persona series and somehow made them work within a medieval fantasy setting. But it’s no mere Persona 'holiday special'. The new IP enhances and evolves the formula, becoming a shining example of how to do JRPGs right. When it comes to my games, I value story and character above all else, and Metaphor delivers that in spades.
Niche Gamer: 9 / 10 by Throgmorton Belmont
Metaphor: ReFantazio has memorable music, a safe take on a job class system, a charming cast that does not resort to being a dating simulator, and a snappy, fluid, and tactical turn-based combat system. Fantasy isn’t dead, it’s so back.
Shacknews: 10 / 10 by Donovan Erskine
Quote not yet avaMetaphor: ReFantazio is, in the simplest of , a Persona game in a fantasy setting. While it would have been exciting to see a few more risks taken to separate itself from that beloved franchise, I can’t deny how thoroughly enjoyable this game is.
