Metroid: Samus Returns for 3DS is a remastered and thoroughly remodeled version of Metroid II: Samus Returns that was originally released on Game Boy in 1991. The modern version was developed by MercuryStream Entertainment, creators of games like the well-received Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.
Samus Aran, an intergalactic bounty hunter who fights with space pirates, is the protagonist here, just like in many other Metroid games. This time she ends up on the planet SR388 where she has to destroy the titular metroid creatures before her enemies get a hold of them.
Action in Metroid: Samus Returns for 3DS is presented from the side. Gameplay focuses on exploration of various vast and nonlinear levels. Given the fact that we are playing an installment of the series that created the metroidvania genre, gaining access to new locations requires us to meet specific conditions, in this case is killing a specific number of enemies. A special detector used by Samus informs us how many of them are left. When we reach the required number, an earthquake happens that lowers the lava level and grants us access to the lower area of the labyrinth.
As one can see, combat plays a crucial role in the game. When fighting, Samus uses a wide range of Beams, futuristic cannons that fire energy bullets and beams. She also uses the unique abilities that her Space Jump suit grants her (she can jump higher when using it). Additionally, Samus can take alternative forms: using Morph Ball allows us to gain access to tunnels and small holes in the walls; Spider Ball gives her the ability to climb walls and walk on ceilings; Spring Ball allows our hero to jump while maintaining its spherical shape.
In comparison with is precursor, Metroid: Samus Returns for 3DS has visuals of a much higher quality. MercuryStream Entertainment also implemented more modern game controls (nowe we can shoot in every direction) and additional abilities that we can use during our adventures.
