The fifth installment of the bestselling series of mountain view shooters, launched in 1992 by the cult Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf. After Urban Strike (1994) and Soviet Strike (1996), which appeared exclusively on stationary and portable consoles, the next part of the series was again addressed to PC players. Like the previous editions of the cycle, the game was released by Electronic Arts.
The action of the game is set in a fictional country, somewhere in south-east Asia. We are following in the footsteps of a certain Colonel LeMonde, a terrorist who came into possession of a prototype nuclear head. It has been modified in such a way as to cause a chain reaction capable of destroying the entire ozone layer and thus leading to the extinction of the planet. In order to neutralize the threat to the world, we have to break through a number of locations, including the South China Sea, North Korea and Siberia, and face several other villains, such as Napoleon Hwong and Kym Zung-Lee, who were linked by a disgraceful cooperation with LeMond.
Most of the game is spent in the cockpit of a modern helicopter Super Apache, armed with Hydra missiles, Hellfire and Sidewinder rockets. In total, however, we will direct 15 different vehicles, starting from other helicopters and airplanes (e.g. Cobra, Harrier Jump Jet, A-10 Thunderbolt II), and finishing with ground equipment e.g. M1 Abrams tanks, Bradley combat vehicles, self-propelled rocket launchers and hovercraft. As in previous editions of the series, the action takes place on extensive maps, divided into smaller regions, which we can freely explore during the game. In subsequent missions, our main task will be to destroy enemy units and installations, but we are also faced with tasks such as rescuing hostages or escorting infantry units. Each of them will require a slightly different tactical approach, appropriate weaponry selection and skilful management of fuel and ammunition.
Nuclear Strike was created on the modified engine of its predecessor, which appeared only on PlayStation and Sega Saturn consoles, and in of luminaire is at the highest level of all the scenes of the cycle. The game features, among others, a radar indicating the current mission objectives and some new camera settings. There was also improved interactivity of the area (e.g. explosion traces) and better intelligence of computer opponents, which translated into a higher level of difficulty of the game. As in previous Soviet Strike, the plot is illustrated by high quality FMV intermittent scenes with live actors.
