Once Human is an open-world multiplayer action game. The game, set in a post-apocalyptic setting, is presented in a first-person perspective and focuses on combat, resource gathering and shelter expansion. It was developed by Starry studio.
In a dark version of the future, a cosmic entity called Stardust has contaminated the world, bringing the apocalypse upon it. The entity instantly infected plants, animals and humans, leading to mutations that created constantly evolving nightmare-like creatures.
However, not everyone succumbed to the cosmic influence; some people showed resilience and even gained the ability to use the alien force for their own ends. This gave rise to factions, among which appeared peace-fighting idealists, ruthless bandits or visionaries wishing to build a new civilization thanks to Stardust.
The protagonist of Once Human is one of the survivors, who is not only trying to survive, but also to learn the truth about the cataclysm. To do this, we travel through ruins and wastelands with captured vehicles (such as motorcycles), investigate dangerous anomalies and face wild animals, other humans and monsters (oversized spiders or flying ghosts). In combat we rely on firearms (shotguns, rifles, etc.), which we adapt to our preferences thanks to numerous modifications. The most powerful of the enhancements are obtained after defeating huge mutants, thus gaining access to traits and skills based on Stardust.
An important element of Once Human are crafting schemes, unlocking access to new items. They are also used to expand our fortress, providing it with better protection from harsh weather conditions, defense turrets or power generators powered by wind, water or solar energy. The game gives us a lot of freedom in creating our shelter - we almost freely put up walls and ages, create terraces and fences.
The survival layer is also visible at the level of our alter ego, which, with the consumption of contaminated food and water, slowly loses its sanity. This in turn translates into fewer health points.

Once Human's setting and gunplay have merits, despite some unoriginal ideas and systems. However, its faulty foundations, from the blueprint system and the building to the story-telling, keep it from truly standing out.
IGN: 8 / 10 by Justin Koreis
Once Human combines simple but solid building and upgrading with some of the best, and weirdest, creature designs of the year to create a very enjoyable survival-crafting experience.
