A survival horror in which we play Lars Karcy, one of the victims of horrific experiments carried out at the secret research facility of Lystra Laboratories. While playing in OverBlood we travel through claustrophobic locations, fight with encountered opponents and solve puzzles pushing the story forward.
OverBlood is a representative of the survival horror genre developed by Riverhillsoft. The game was published on the PS1 console by Electronic Arts.
The action of OverBlood takes place in Lystra Laboratories, a secret research facility where controversial experiments on the human genome were carried out; when things got out of control, the staff ran away, leaving the victims of their research at the mercy of their fate, turned into bloodthirsty monsters. In the course of their adventure, players take on the role of Lars Karcy, affected by amnesia (Raza Karcy in the American and Japanese versions of the game), who wakes up from cryogenic sleep. The protagonist (who is one of the test subjects) travels across deserted laboratories, gradually learning the truth about the nature of the experiments, and also beginning to understand his role in them.
The action of OverBlood is observed from cinematic shots - however, at any time we can switch to the FPP view, if only to carefully look at the elements of the environment. In the course of the game, we mainly explore futuristic locations, fight encountered opponents and solve puzzles that push the plot forward; there is also a place for occasional QTEs. Lars is not alone, as he is accompanied by a small robot called Pipo, which over time turns out to be much more useful than it might seem; our protege can also count on the help of his friend Milly Azray, over which the player takes control at certain moments.
Unlike the first installments of the Resident Evil series, which used two-dimensional backgrounds, the action of OverBlood is presented in a fully three-dimensional environment. However, the visuals of this game were not its strongest point at the time of its release.
