PaRappa the Rapper, released on PS1 in 1997, is an unusual game created by NanaOn-Sha studio. The production is considered to be one of the first representatives of the genre of modern rhythmic games, and its great popularity resulted in a remaster for PlayStation 4 which was released in 2017.
The main character of PaRappa the Rapper is a rapping dog, who wants to impress his colleague named Sunny Funny. However, Joe Chin, a rich and narcissistic dog who likes the same girl, stands on his way. In order to win the heart of Sunny Funny, Parappa starts learning kung-fu and tries to get a driving license.
PaRappa the Rapper, released on PS1, is one of the first contemporary rhythm games that has paved the way for titles such as Guitar Hero. The production consists of six story-driven levels, during which the main character has to repeat the rap sequences after his master.
The player's task is to press the buttons displayed on the screen at the right moment. The more accurate the player is, the better the rating they receive. You can get the highest score only during the second playthrough and after you unlock the special phase of the game, in which, instead of pressing the buttons appearing on the screen, you press a secret combination that gives you extra points.
Although the environment in PaRappa the Rapper is three-dimensional, the main characters are two-dimensional creatures that look like they were cut out of paper. By combining this graphics style with bright, intensive color palette, the developers have ultimately achieved a strong comic effect.
