Phonopolis is another adventure game from Amanita Design, a Czech studio. The indie developer became famous for the cult Happy Game decided to go in a slightly different direction.
Phonopolis takes place in the title fictional city, ruled by a great Leader. This leader has managed to turn the unsuspecting inhabitants into obedient citizens with the help of huge megaphones and subliminal messages. Only Felix, the game's main character, is aware of the danger. The boy must try to get help from other residents before the Leader succeeds in playing the ominous Absolute tone.
Previous Amanita Design games have operated sparingly with narrative, limiting themselves to simple graphics and inarticulate sounds made by characters to tell simple stories. Phonopolis has a true-to-life storyline, and the developers touch on themes of individualism and social manipulation while maintaining their typical lighthearted, playful production style.
Leaving aside the narrative and audiovisual setting, Phonopolis is almost a classic Amanita Design game. This is a point-and-click adventure game in which we travel through locations and solve various, often strange puzzles.
Phonopolis is the first game by Amanita Design with 3D graphics. The developers stylized their work on classic animated films, but at the same time they kept the style which distinguishes games by the Czech studio from the competition. An important role is played by the music composed by Tomáš "Floex" Dvorák, who assisted Amanita Design on previous productions (including Machinarium).
