Game mechanics

Like Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver, Pokemon Crystal for 3DS is a faithful conversion of 2000’s title. The third member of the second generation offers all features of two previous titles that built on the basis of first games. The area of Johto is inhabited by 100 new pokemon and species known from the first generation as well, though some of them can be obtained only by trading with players who own previous games, e.g. Pokemon Red and Pokemon Silver. Creatures we caught can be trained to increase their statistics and teach them new moves, and then put them against teams of other trainers, including real players. There are also novelties introduced in Pokemon Gold/Silver, including day and night cycle and breeding system.

Aside from the old content, Pokemon Crystal adds more than a few small changes, some of which became the inseparable part of the series. This is where players could choose between playing as a boy or a girl for the first time, as well as take on the Battle Tower – special location available after finishing the main storyline. It is there where trainers can take part in challenging battles with special rules.

Technical aspects

As a faithful port, Pokemon Crystal uses the same visuals as original GameBoy Color release, just like Pokemon Gold/Silver. However, the game changed some locations from two previous titles and introduced simple animations for pokemon, as well as special music theme for three legendary beasts. The 3DS’s versions offers multiplayer battle against other players through local network, as well as option of transferring our creatures to newer games with PokeBank application.
