Release Date: TBA
A fan-made interpretation of Half-Life 2: Episode Three, based on the screenplay published by Marc Laidlaw in 2017. Project Borealis is a first-person shooter, continuining the story from HL2 (it is not considered canon). The game is using Unreal Engine 5, however it is distributed as a mod for Half-Life 2.
Project Borealis is a shooter that represents a fan's vision of what had been brought to life. The development of this project was undertaken by the independent team Icebreaker Industries.
In of mechanics, Project Borealis is based on the original Half-Life 2 and its two add-ons. We once again take on the role of Gordon Freeman, and the adventure leads us through locations like Ravenholm (which we visit in a winter scenery this time around) and the Arctic, where the titular research ship awaits us.
We carry out missions set before us, confront opponents, and also solve environmental puzzles, most of which are based on physics. In addition to the standard arsenal that includes firearms and a characteristic crowbar, we also have the iconic Gravity Gun at our disposal, a special tool for manipulating gravity, which allows us to move heavier objects in the air and throw them at enemies.
Project Borealis is a direct continuation of Half-Life 2: Episode Two. The story told in the game focuses on the titular research ship, on board of which there is a powerful weapon that can decide the Earth's fate. Given that Gordon Freeman and Alyx Vance have to decide whether it will be used to defeat the invaders or destroyed, the future of the entire world lies in their hands.
It is worth noting that although the story plot of this project was written by Marc Laidlaw, the scriptwriter of the first two installments of the Half-Life series along with two expansions of the second game, it is not part of the canon. Since its creation, it has become outdated due to the release of Half-Life: Alyx.
Project Borealis operates on the Unreal Engine 5 instead of Source 2 technology, but it is still distributed as a mod for Half-Life 2, which is required for it to run.
In November 2024, Project Borealis received a short and playable prologue that takes players to Ravenholm and allows them to test basic mechanics, check the quality of the graphics, and listen to the music tracks from the new soundtrack.
