Release Date: July 31, 2013
Remake of a classic FPS from 1994 - Rise of the Triad: Dark War. The game was produced by Danish development studio Interceptor Entertainment. The main theme of the main campaign are struggles with cultists who plan to destroy Los Angeles. Player takes the role of one of the five of the H.U.N.T. squad and is sent on a mission to infiltrate the island on which the dangerous sect has its headquarters.
Rise of the Triad is a first person shooter which is a successor of the popular game from 1994. The game was developed by a Danish Interceptor Entertainment Studios, which previously created a fan remake of Duke Nukem 3D.
The game features a full-size single player campaign that allows you to play as one of the five of the H.U.N.T. squad (High-Risk United Nations Taskforce). Each character has unique abilities and their own fighting style. Their mission is to infiltrate the island ruled by cultists who aim to destroy Los Angeles. The first part of the series was released in 1994, and since then much has changed in the genre of first-person shooters. The authors did not follow modern trends, and instead focused on recreating the crazy, violent, and highly humorous style of the first game.
Rise of the Triad puts emphasis on unrestrained destruction, so the gameplay mainly consists of killing hordes of enemies. The primary weapon is an MP-40 SMG with endless ammunition. There are also others, more wacky murder tools such as excalibat, which is a baseball bat with a magic eye that can send series of exploding balls at enemies. In turn, the drunken rocket launcher fires a herd of missiles of unpredictable flight paths. You can also use a number of ingenious traps. Rise of the Triad is even more brutal than the original. Enemies are literally being torn to shreds – a good hit makes their arms and legs fly to the four corners of the world, while heads happily roll on the floor. During all this rampage, the heroes regularly entertain you with funny comments. The game offers 20 single player levels, and each of them is full of secrets waiting to be discovered.
Rise of the Triad also features multiplayer. Three game modes are included in it: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag. The last of them just had to appear in the remake, since back in the 90s Rise of the Triad was the first shooter offering this online mode. It is worth noting that both in online play as well as the solo campaign, there are collectibles that may make you indestructible or transform you into a dog. Veterans may want to enable the sounds and music from the original game. It is worth adding that the game is based on Unreal Engine 3.0, so it offers extensive modding tools.
