Shovel Knight for PC, PS4 and etc. is a debut project of an independent studio Yacht Club Games founded in 2011 by Sean Velasco and a group of former employees of Way Forward (creators of games such as A Boy and His Blob, BloodRayne: Betrayal and Double Dragon: Neon).
The game is set in a fantasy realm, and the player controls the titular Shovel Knight, whose task is to defeat an evil Sorceress and save his beloved. While wielding a legendary weapon – Shovel Blade – the hero must face formidable of The Order of No Quarter and overcome many pitfalls lying in wait for him.
The creators of Shovel Knight drew inspiration from productions such as Mega Man, Castlevania and Dark Souls. The title is therefore a combination of a classic 2D side-scrolling platformer, adventure, and role-playing game. It is worth noting that we have an opportunity to interact with some elements of the environment, which often triggers mechanisms facilitating completion of the level (e.g. an undermined stone can be moved from its place).
The developers made sure to provide varied locations (including a forest, glacier, and fortress), as well as a great variety of opponents, with challenging bosses among them. In addition to the single-player campaign there is also a multiplayer mode for up to four players.
In of visuals, Shovel Knight for PC, PS4 and etc. refers to aesthetics of 8-bit productions. Two-dimensional graphics are characterized by a very limited palette (similar to the one from NES console), simple animations and very distinct effect of pixelation. The whole experience is complemented by an atmospheric soundtrack composed by Jake Kaufman.

The last expansion to the well-received game Shovel Knight. Both the add-on and the base game have been developed by Yacht Club Games. The main protagonist of the expansion is the titular King of Cards, who is one of the bosses the player has to fight as the Shovel Knight in the base game. The main protagonist has to prove their rights to the crown by defeating three usurpers from the neighboring lands. Similarly to the base game, Shovel Knight: King of Cards is a 2D platform game with RPG elements. The new hero fights and moves in a different manner than the previous protagonists - he mounts a short charge, which stuns the enemies and destroys some of the obstacles on the map. He also has a special ability - he can perform a pirouette on enemies' heads multiple times. As one progresses through the story, the character acquires more powerful weapons, armor, and new companions. An interesting element of the game is a minigame, in which one can play cards with NPCs. The gameplay revolves around the story campaign, which is well complemented by special challenges, in which one can test their skills in platform puzzles as well as combat.

Specter of Torment is a free DLC for the fan-favorite platform game Shovel Knight, developed by Yacht Club Games. This time, we play as a new protagonist, the titular Specter. The expansion takes place before the events of the base game. In of gameplay, Specter of Torment is identical to the base game, combining the elements of a 2D platformer, an RPG, and an action-adventure game. Once again, we observe the game from a side perspective. We explore some new fantastic locations, solve simple environmental puzzles, and fight the enemies. However, Specter has a new move set and skill set at his disposal. Unlike his predecessor, he can climb walls and other environmental objects, which opens new tactical possibilities for the players. The iconic shovel was replaced with a characteristic scythe.

A free expansion to Shovel Knight, a well-received platform title developed by Yacht Club Games. This time, the players received a completely new hero – Plague Knight, who is known for being one of the antagonists in the base game. After his defeat at the hands of Shovel Knight, the fledging protagonist decides to leave his former allies and embark on a journey in search of ingredients necessary for creation of a mysterious, powerful potion. The gameplay of Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows is almost completely the same as its predecessor. We are given a mix of an action game, RPG, and a platform game – the game focuses on exploration of two-dimensional levels, and facing the encountered enemies. The new hero forces the players to develop completely new tactics – even if most of the journey takes place in reused locations, the new hero is not equipped with the trademark shovel – he makes use of bombs and short-distance flying. The list of novelties is complemented by new enemies and bosses.
