Sol Cresta is a shoot'em up developed by PlatinumGames studio, known for such games as NieR: Automata. The game is the first installment of the Neo-Classic Arcade Series, and is inspired by Moon Cresta and Terra Cresta, which were popular games on arcade in the 1980s.
In Sol Cresta we take on the role of a fighter pilot. Viewing the action from a top-down perspective, during the game we fly up the screen and eliminate hordes of enemy units, among which we can find both "cannon fodder" in mass quantities, as well as powerful bosses. A characteristic feature of the described title is the "docking" mechanic, presented for the first time in Moon Cresta. It consists in docking our fighter in its successive iterations, which appear in certain moments. In this way, we acquire new weapons and increase our combat potential. On the other hand, the fighter gets bigger and bigger with time, which makes it an easier target for adversaries.
Sol Cresta features pixel art graphics and a catchy, chiptune soundtrack.
Sol Cresta was first announced on 1 April 2020. Although at the time it turned out to be just an April Fools' joke, exactly one year later PlatinumGames presented it to the world again, but this time the announcement turned out to be true.
