Release Date: 2026
A combination of space simulator and action adventure game, referring to such titles as Wing Commander. The production was initally designed as a solo campaign in Star Citizen, a game from Cloud Imperium Games - a company founded by the famous game developer Chris Roberts.
Squadron 42 is a new project by Cloud Imperium Games, founded by Chris Roberts, creator of games such as Wing Commander and Freelancer. The title is a combination of FPS and space simulator genres and was created as part of an ambitious Star Citizen project, but over time, the developers decided to make it an independent production. The game was financed by a crowdfunding campaign.
The action takes place in the 30th century. Humanity explores the cosmos and attempts to colonize it, meeting various alien races in universe. In of civilization, society and culture, the human race has merged into one political entity, under the name of the United Earth Empire. Living in the UEE is not easy - you have to earn the status of a citizen by military or civil service. The player takes on the role of a young recruit of the title, elite squadroon of stellar pilots.
Playing the role of a starship pilot, the player travels faraway corners of the universe, fights enemies and performs various missions. You move around the game not only in a spacecraft, but also on foot - then the game resembles a shooter with adventure elements (part of the time you spend exploring and talking to the characters we meet). As the game progresses, you develop the hero's skills and acquire new equipment - both weapons and ships - a wide range of different space vehicles is available to the player.
The story told in the game is also more than rudimentary - the creators put a lot of effort into making it truly cinematic.
Squadron 42 campaign can be played in solo mode only, but the game gives you access to several smaller online modes: The Commander Arena (fighters' dogfights - against bots or human opponents), Murray Cup (aircraft racing) and Star Marine (a mode that resembles a classic multiplayer, first-person-view shooter).
Squadron 42 features a very attractive three-dimensional graphical design, which was created using the Lumberyard engine (developed by Amazon) and an advanced physics system. In the game you will also find great animations created with the use of cutting-edge motion capture technology. Many well-known and celebrated actors were involved in the Cloud Imperium Games' biggest project, among them Liam Cunningham (best known for his role of Davos in Game of Thrones), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker from Star Wars), Gary Oldman (Gordon in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, Dracula in Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula) or Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully from The X-Files).
