Steven Universe: Save the Light for PS4 and XONE is an RPG game developed by GrumpyFace Studios, based on the Steven Universe cartoon created by Cartoon Network. Save the Light is a sequel to the mobile-only Attack on the Light, which is based in the same cartoon universe. This time, however, the devs created a bigger and more ambitious game that mixes elements of RPG, exploration, and riddles. Though Save the Light is based in the same universe as cartoon, it tells a separate story. Rebecca Sugar, the creator the cartoon, was involved in writing the game’s scenario. Save the Light uses a turn-based combat sysem, similar to the one used in Obsidian’s South Park: Stick of Truth.
The Plot
Even though the story Steven Universe: Save the Light for PS4 and XONE is set in the same universe as the Cartoon Network’s cartoon, it tells a new story; you will understand everything perfectly, though there are many references to the show made in the game. Fans will also meet many familiar faces from the TV screen.
The game stars when a mysterious warrior appears in Beach City. He steals a powerful weapon with intention to use it to destroy magic and rule over the world. Only Steven and Gems, his powerful companions, can stop him. Steven himself is a half-human, half-gem, forced to prove his worth almost all the time. Our hero and his friends leave Beach City to chase the weapon thief. The stakes are high, because if they fail, there will be no more light.
Mechanics
Steven Universe: Save the Light for PS4 and XONE combines elements of both turn-based and real-time RPGs. The exploration of the game’s world happens real-time. We will meet many various NPC with whom we can talk or buy from them. As we explore, we will also encounter some simple puzzles and riddles that will require us to take advantage of the game’s eviornment.
Save the Light uses the turn-based mechanics in combat. Our party is taken to a separate arena before evey encounter, and they leave it after the battle is over. We have to use our party ’ special abilities in combat if we want to achieve victory. We can also use team attacks to deal more damage. Combat mechanics, and the overall way the fighting happens, is very similar to the one from South Park: Stick of Truth, Paper Mario, or Paper Mario: The Thousand-Years Door.
We can have up to four from the eight available party when in battle. These are the characters that you may know from the cartoon. Each of them has their own unique abilities.
Technical Aspects
Steven Universe: Save the Light for PS4 and XONE has cartoon visuals that look almost the same as the show the game is based on. Both characters and the environment are presented in a way typical for the Cartoon Network shows. The overall stylistics of Steven Universe: Save the Light makes it hard to tell apart the game and the cartoon.
