A real-time strategy with board game and RPG elements, created by the developers of Wartile. Successor takes us to a (procedurally generated) fantasy world torn by conflicts. We control a lord and their group of heroes, travelling the world and participating in battles taking place on dioramas.
Successor to real-time strategy, enriched with RPG elements and mechanics borrowed from board games. The game was developed by the independent Danish studio Playwood Project, which has a game based on a similar concept, Wartile, in its portfolio.
In Successor we watch the events from a bird's eye view.
The game takes us to a fantasy kingdom torn apart by civil wars and forbidden magic. The world has been divided into regions, each guarded by a hostile Lord serving as a boss and residing in a powerful fortress. The land and all its contents (from maps, through quests, to events and enemy placement) are procedurally generated, and we push the adventure forward by completing tasks.
During the game, we take on the role of one of the lords, and our goal is to bring order to the entire land and unite it under our banner. It won't be easy, as a number of factions are fighting for control over the kingdom, each with their own unique history and tactics, as well as a set of strengths and weaknesses. We don't have to fight with everyone in this process - the game allows us to form alliances. However, it should be ed that our actions and decisions affect the course of the story.
Individual lords are differentiated in of fighting style, preferred weapons, and combat skills. The decision who we pick determines the course of the entire adventure. Our lord also needs in the form of heroes representing various professions. Among them, we will find both seasoned warriors and mages, as well as rogues who prefer long-distance combat.
As we progress, we gain access to new heroes. This happens partially thanks to the growing reputation of our lord.
The game takes place on miniature boards covered with a grid of hexes. They represent different biomes, and their unique features may prove useful on the battlefield... or quite the opposite - bring about our destruction. For example, it is worth placing the distance unit on an elevation to increase its range, while swamps can significantly slow down our team.
Different natural elements can play an important role. Fire can ignite tall grass, and water can extinguish it, ice immobilizes units, while a cloud of poison can be ignited by a single spark. This is important because the game also implements variable weather conditions, including rain, storms or snowfall, which can contribute to the outcome of a given battle.
The battles take place in real time, but the game allows us to pause the gameplay at any time (and start the so-called Focus Moment) to react to the enemy's move. For example, we can use this to perform a dodge or counterattack, or make use of a selected skill. In addition to available abilities, the combat potential of individual units is determined by their equipment - weapons, armor and additional item. Over time, we develop heroes, as well as acquire better equipment, which makes them grow in strength and able to face increasingly greater challenges.
Successor only allows for singleplayer gameplay. The game features story campaigns, allowing us to delve into the game world and the specifics of the factions shaking it. There is also an Adventure mode, in which we can create our own, custom campaigns.
