Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is a set of remastered versions of two classic jRPGs originally released for the first generation PlayStation console.
Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is a collection of refreshed versions of the first two installments of the popular jRPG series.
The action takes place in a fantasy land slightly enriched with elements from Chinese mythology. The first part tells the story of a teenager named Tir McDohl, who is the son of a general in the Scarlet Moon Empire. When his father goes on a war campaign against the rebels, the hero, along with his servants and best friend, enters a military academy. While serving this institution, he comes into possession of a magical rune sought by corrupt mighty men and a court sorceress. The young man is forced to save himself by fleeing and s the rebels.
The action of Suikoden II begins some time after the events of the first part. The plot of the game focuses on the conflict between the Highland Kingdom and the city-state of Jowston. The main character is a soldier of the former nation, who, together with a friend, discovers a conspiracy to torpedo peace talks and prolong the war.
Both games included in Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars are classic jRPGs. While playing, we explore the world, complete quests, develop characters and fight battles.
Skirmishes are played in a turn-based system and during them we give orders to a team of heroes. Both parts of the series allow you to recruit more than a hundred characters, each with unique abilities and equipment. An important role is played by developing relationships with these comrades-in-arms, which is done by completing side missions assigned to them.
In addition to the standard skirmishes in the campaign, we also encounter two additional types of clashes - special battles based on the rules of the game "paper, scissors, stone", as well as strategic battles of entire armies, involving troops assigned to different heroes. Death in those clashes results in the removal of the character in question permanently from our team.
The game offers a single player mode only.
Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars features heavily improved graphics. All background illustrations have been redesigned. Visual effects have also been improved. In addition, the music has been remastered and useful features have been introduced to the gameplay, such as accelerating the course of battles, a logbook with records of conversations and an automatic game state saving system.

Game Ratings for Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars Video Game.
One More Game: 9 / 10 by Ricki Buzon
While some of the blemishes from the original games, such as permadeath and item management in Suikoden I, remain, they do little to diminish the enduring appeal of the Suikoden duology. These enhancements bring the games into the modern era, allowing returning fans and newcomers—particularly JRPG enthusiasts—to fully appreciate their timeless charm. The remaster is a bit light on the updates, and while we would have loved to see and consume more Suikoden content, what’s on offer now is enough to enjoy both games at their best. Whether Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars will pave the way for remastered versions of other titles in the series remains uncertain. For now, these two interconnected yet standalone classics offer an engaging experience filled with compelling narratives, enjoyable combat, and entertaining minigames. They stand as a testament to why Suikoden I and II are celebrated as some of the finest JRPGs from the early days of the PlayStation, earning a well-deserved revival decades later.
Capsule Computers: 9 / 10 by Travis Bruno
Suikoden I & II HD Remaster touches up two classic JRPGs and adds just enough QoL improvements to work out some of the antiquated systems while leaving a few annoyances intact.
Checkpoint Gaming: 8 / 10 by Charlie Kelly
More could have been done to make Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars a more momentous release for the series' 30th anniversary. Quality of life additions such as a prettier look and cleaner HUD to the first game in particular could've made the two games stand together better in this collection, but two great games from thirty years ago are, unsurprisingly, still great games today. There's a lot of magic, charm and gusto to recruiting your dozens upon dozens of friends and allies, all in the hope of overcoming a greater, more powerful looming threat. This beautiful but also simultaneously terrifying world full of injustice is incredibly timely for both returning fans and newcomer RPG enthusiasts like myself. So gather your friends; it's time to take on the world.
