The Captain is Dead is a strategic electronic board game in which we, together with other of the spacecraft, have to take matters into our own hands after the captain is killed and we are attacked by aliens. Thunderbox Entertainment studio is responsible for the game, which has another board game, Tsuro: The Game of The Path, designed to play in virtual reality.

Plot

According to the title, the captain of our spaceship dies in flight, and we must take over his duties so as not to share his fate. This requires the coordination of the rest of the crew, which has to deal with repelling alien attacks, repairing damaged components, where the key to victory is to provide enough time to create a part to fly away from this cursed place.

Mechanics

The Captain is Dead is designed both for self-playing and cooperation with other players on one screen, where chaotic control over the crew of the spacecraft awaits us. Each member has a unique set of features that make some more suitable for certain tasks than others. A soldier is a specialist in the killing of aliens, so it's better to send him into battle than a minor crewman who dies faster than a blink of an eye. Apart from that, we can find here a cyborg, which is not affected by the cosmic anomalies, or a ensign who not only assimilates knowledge quickly, but also runs even faster and much more.

But the main threat here is alien attacks. Fortunately, any room on the ship can tip the balance of victory to our side. On the ship we will find a bridge that allows us to scan space for threats, but also to communicate with the crew and repair the shields of the ship, a U core for improving the crew, a laboratory where we can improve the ship and conduct research on space anomalies or an armoury where, thanks to torpedoes and automatic guns, we can shoot at the enemy. The main goal, however, is to provide the necessary time to repair the jumper engine to escape to hyperspace, where the rescue awaits us.

Technical aspects

The Captain is Dead is a fully three-dimensional game observed from an isometric view, in which very strong and contrasting colours are visible at first sight.

The game is based on a board game published under the same title in 2014 by AEG publishing house.
